Nuclear power stations instead of clean free energy?
OTECThere is a resurgence in the interest in using nuclear power to fuel desalination facilities around the world, even though it produces nuclear waste, can be very expensive and often is considered unsafe to operate in many of the target countries. The Guardian has an article about it.

For some countries which are close to the right water conditions, such as India, OTEC powered desalination plants would be a lot more attractive solutions. Marocco is supposedly looking at nuclear power plants for desalination as well. They would do much better if they put in Seawater Greenhouse solar distilleries instead.

Algea to hydrogen, grown in a tank near you?
Alternative fuelsExtracting hydrogen using algea grown in tanks is discussed in a Wired article on the startup company, Melis Energy. The company is currently producing energy from an experimental plant at 30 times the price of natural gas. But it is still early days.

A good or a bad solution to water shortage?
Seawater GreenouseWire magazine has an article on a new manual irrigation pump made by Nairobi-based nonprofit company Appropriate Technologies for Enterprise Creation (Approtec). Wired says "As of December, there were 20,000 MoneyMakers pumping away in Kenya, according to Approtec's market research." "IDE, a similar company operating in Bangladesh, has sold 1.3 million pumps."

The Bangladesh sales figures show the potential of such a low tech pump system. What impact is this going to have on the water table in a very arid region such as Kenya? Perhaps some Seawater Greenhouses would be appropriate to offset some of the issues this may create.
