Makai’s Ocean Energy Research Center (OERC) in Kona, Hawaii has received several major pieces of equipment for its Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) demonstration plant. Two new heat exchangers (2-megawatt thermal duty each), and a 100 kilowatt ammonia turbine-generator have arrived and are in various stages of installation and testing. To date, Makai has tested four condensers and three evaporators at the OERC, each made of either aluminum or titanium. The facility has been designed… Continue reading
Renewable energy alternatives and improvements in energy security through the introduction of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) can positively impact Fiji and the Pacific region’s economies.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Public Utilities (Water, Energy) Works and Transport Timoci Natuva during a presentation today on Sustainable Utilisation of Ocean Thermal Energy in the South Pacific Region.
“Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion will enhance our initiatives of Green and Blue Economy concept, which was introduced… Continue reading
The OTEC team of Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) affiliated with Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) had successfully finished 20kW OTEC pilot plant public demonstration.
The 20kW OTEC pilot plant which is a down-scaled model of 1MW OTEC plant was designed in detail based on R-32 by the Korean OTEC team which consists of 13 national institutes and universities in the end of 2012. After manufacturing unit parts,… Continue reading
The 2nd International OTEC Symposium will be hosted from June 15 to June 18, 2014 by the Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) Deep Ocean Water Application Research Center (DOWARC) OTEC Team as a special session of the 24th International Offshore(Ocean) and Polar Engineering Conference(ISOPE) 2014 in Busan, Korea. The Symposium will provide a platform for information exchange and discussion, and will identify steps to OTEC commercialisation for public and… Continue reading
Lockheed Martin and Reignwood Group Sign Contract To Develop Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Power Plant
Lockheed Martin and Reignwood Group have signed a contract to start design of a 10-megawatt OTEC power plant, which, when complete, will be the largest OTEC project to date.
“The ocean holds enormous potential for terrawatts of clean, baseload energy,” said Dan Heller, vice president of new ventures for Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training. “Capturing this energy through a system like OTEC means we have the opportunity to produce reliable and sustainable power, supporting… Continue reading
Deep Ocean Water Application Research Center (DOWARC) of the Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute (MOERI) and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) have completed to install a 20kW OTEC pilot plant in October 2013 and are going to have a public demonstration in November 2013 after trial run and basic performance test.
DOWARC, MOERI has been working on a national project called ‘Development of utilization technology of deep… Continue reading
Recently the repair works on NELHA’s 40-inch deep-seawater pipe were successfully completed. Operating at 150M depth and using remotely operated vehicles, it was quite an undertaking.
The high-density 1.2-mile-long polyethylene pipe, installed in 1987, extends to depths of 2,000 feet. The pipeline is the backbone of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority’s coldwater aquaculture and research projects.
Surveys of the pipeline in December 2007 showed the mooring bridles, which help hold the pipeline to… Continue reading
